A man is now in custody after he was observed firing shots from the tower at the Dam Store near the mouth of the Big Thompson canyon Sunday morning.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office received a call at around 5 a.m. Sunday regarding a man in crisis. He was observed firing shots in the area.

Deputies and members of the Colorado State Patrol, Estes Park Police Department, and Fort Collins Police Services shut down Highway 34 to prevent traffic from entering the area. At approximately 7:50 a.m., a Fort Collins Police Services armored vehicle was used to make contact with the man, who surrendered himself to protective custody without further incident.

Additional information will not be released until charges are filed.
