Longmont Police Investigating Monday Morning Arson Spree

XXXL Fire Background

Police in Longmont are currently investigating a string of arson cases that occurred during early hours of Monday morning. The first of six calls came in at 1:50 a.m. on June 26, where it was reported that a dumpster filled with cardboard was on fire in an alley in the 400 block of Main Street. The next call was at 2:35 a.m., regarding a vehicle that had been set on fire in 400 block of Sixth Avenue, which also resulted in flames spreading to a nearby fence and house eaves. Then, at 3:18 a.m., three more burning vehicles were reported in the 100 block of Longs Peak Avenue. Another arson call was made to police at 3:30 a.m., which was a fifth car on fire in the 700 block of Baker Street. While working these cases on Monday afternoon, a detective also discovered another scorched vehicle located near Kimbark Street and Sixth Avenue, which had gone unreported overnight.

Police don’t believe any of the victims were connected or specifically targeted. In two of the cases, witnesses reported seeing a short, black man wearing a black sweatshirt with a white patch running away from the fires, however no one has been arrested yet. Longmont police are using an arson investigation dog to help uncover any evidence, and are also increasing their patrols throughout town. Anyone with information about this arson spree should contact Detective Wayne Rafferty at 303-651-8516, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), or send a text message with NOCO (followed by message content) to 274637 (CRIMES).
