I have always wondered if there is some sort of conspiracy with cities and tire companies. Lord knows I have ruined more than one tire on a vicious pothole.

Of course I'm joking on the whole conspiracy theory. Keeping up with potholes around town must be a nightmare as they seem to populate more than rabbits.

What I want to know, is who's job is it to count and log all the potholes in Greeley? That must be a daunting task. City officials said that between January 1, 2012 and April 30, 2015, there have been 165,857 potholes filled within Greeley’s city limits.

That's a lot of potholes! The bad news is that will all the rain we've been getting, they just seem to be breeding and it's hard to find a road that isn't chalk full of potholes. The good news is that the City of Greeley will be manning crews to take care of as many of the nasty things as they can, and it's not cheap. Below is what the city has spent, and will spend on just filling potholes:

  • 2012 - $89,000
  • 2013 - $135,813
  • 2014 - 153,851
  • 2015 - $53,784 (through April 30th)

With over 360 miles of roads just within Greeley city limits which is actually over 1000 "lane miles."  The city budget does account for pothole repair work but the backlog is enormous and they can't fill them fast enough before new ones appear, again, largely in part to the wet weather we've been having. Truth of the matter is also that many require multiple repairs, as we all know, before streets can be completely repaved and repaired properly.
