One of the biggest draws to Colorado are the Rocky Mountains. There are over 58 mountain peaks that exceed 14,000 feet in our state and one of them you can take a cog railway all the way to the top of it. I am talking about Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The train starts in Manitou Springs and takes you on a scenic trip to the summit of Pikes Peak, an elevation of 14,114 feet.

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway has been in operation since 1891. 127 years the railway has been operating. According to the Gazette in Colorado Springs, the future of the tourist attraction is uncertain and could not open back up at all.  The Pikes Peak Cog Railway will not open back up this spring after months of maintenance. Broadmoor Hotel President and CEO Jack Damioli, the owner of the railway said that the railway could be closed for up to three years while they study the attractions fate. He added that after that process is completed that the railway might be rebuilt or may never reopen again. If the rebuild happens, it would be a total replacement of the engines, cars, track and possibly the depot.

The Pikes Peak Cog Railway is only one of two cog railways in the country and the Pikes Peak railway is the tallest in the world. According to hotel officials, the railways equipment and its infrastructure "run its useful life".

Would would love to hear your thoughts on this. Have you ever been on the railway before? I really wanted to take the trip up on the train this summer, but it looks like the opportunity has passed me by... Possibly forever.
