A state trooper was shot during a traffic stop near Dotsero, Colorado on Interstate 70.

UPDATE [5:45PM] It has been disclosed that the trooper who was shot in the incident is listed in critical, but stable condition at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. His name has also been released. Eugene Hofacker, a six-year-veteran, is assigned to the Vail Troop Office.


UPDATE [3:28PM] A portion of I-70 has reopened.

 

UPDATE [2:15PM] Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario spoke to the press about today's incident. He confirmed that the state trooper was shot while assisting a driver who was pulled over on the side of I-70. Vallario said that the trooper was shot as he approached the driver-side window of the suspect's car. A second trooper shot a killed the suspect. Multiple troopers were in the area on their way to training and were able to get on the scene quickly to provide assistance and secure the scene. In addition to discussing the incident, Vallario also answered questions about the closure of I-70 and plans to reopen it. He said that due to the fact that the crime scene is in the middle of the interstate, there is no current timeline or estimate for reopening I-70. UPDATE [1:45PM] Eastbound I-70 has been closed again.

UPDATE [12:45PM] I-70 is slowly reopening, according to CDOT:

UPDATE [11:28am] Both directions of I-70 are currently closed due to this incident. CDOT says the Westbound lanes could reopen by mid-afternoon today, but there's currently no telling when the Eastbound lanes will reopen.

The trooper is currently being treated by emergency personnel at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. No names have been released.
