Colorado drivers are not paying nearly as much taxes at the pump, as other states. In a report by the American Petroleum Institute, California is listed as number one. Paying a tax rate of 52.89 cents per gallon. Alaska has the lowest rate with 12.4 cents per gallon. Colorado comes in near the middle with a rate of 22 cents per gallon. This isn't all bad news as most of the taxes from gasoline sales supposedly goes to infrastructure for the state, including roads. I still have a hard time paying over $3 per gallon knowing that petroleum companies earn billions each year. Can you say "price-gouge"?

According to Tax Foundation:

Gas taxes are generally used to fund transportation infrastructure maintenance and new projects. While gas taxes are not a perfect user fee like tolls, they are generally more favorable than other taxes because they at least loosely connect the users of roads with the costs of enjoying them
