Tara’s Story:

Tara Eyer is a wife, a mother of two daughters, a Colorado native, and currently resides in Loveland. Tara has a rare, autosomal dominate cancer disease called von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) which causes tumors to form in the brain, spinal cord, inner ear, eyes, and abdominal organs such as the kidneys, pancreas, and adrenal glands. Her first diagnosis occurred when she was 24 years old after a brain tumor was discovered only three weeks before her wedding. VHL is a genetic disease and both of Tara’s daughters have been diagnosed with VHL and already are showing tumor activity. In spite of these difficulties, Tara is determined to live well with her disease and teach her daughters that although VHL is a major part of their lives, it does not define them and they can have a full and happy life despite the challenges they face. Because of the rarity of VHL, it is a challenge to find physicians and surgeons familiar with this disease. Tara travels to the National Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland for many of her surgeries and treatments.
